Pieces of Dwelling by Brooke Borcherding

Borcherding constructs a fragmented architectural vocabulary through layered paper, textile, and found materials. The composition assembles disparate domestic elements—geometric forms suggesting rooms, windows, and structural planes—into an unstable visual whole. Rather than depicting a unified interior, the work presents dwelling as accumulation and rupture, with materials and forms sitting in deliberate tension. Color fields shift across the surface; fragments overlap and recede. The collage technique emphasizes process over coherence, with visible seams and edges maintaining the autonomy of individual components. The work engages the spatial paradoxes of habitation itself: the gap between how domestic space functions and how it is experienced, between the architectural ideal and lived reality.
