Artwork
Crossbill, 2023
Two crossbills among fir needles against soft green, eighteen inches square. The crossed mandibles — the feature the species is named for and the thing that lets it prise open a cone — are clearly drawn on the nearer bird. Walsh paints the field mark rather than merely the bird.
