I work into the unknown with each layer — here, the wax and heat pulled these white lines and spirals up out of the dark, tracing something like a field or a current, where one tone meets another. I keep smoothing out the high points, adding and excavating, until the surface itself holds the memory of every pass of the torch. It isn't planned so much as arrived at. Encaustic on cradled birch panel. 12 × 12 in.
