Sky Gods Over Babylon

Brian Fisher

Constellation figures drawn in white line over a mottled ground of slate and rust, with gold leaf worked into the field between them and the sheet's edge cut in a scalloped border. The drawing is diagrammatic — circles, connecting lines, small schematic bodies — closer to a star chart than to a picture of gods. Babylonian astronomy is the oldest continuous record we have of anyone looking up, and Fisher gives it the format of a document rather than a vision.
