Peter Juvonen

The largest painting Juvonen has here and entirely non-representational. Loose linear loops in cobalt, oxblood and ochre wander across a worked field of white and shell pink, catching small rectangles of flat colour as they go — yellow, viridian, crimson — like notes pinned to a stave. The surface is scraped and rebuilt in places, and the line is never allowed to close into a shape you could name. Set against his animal portraits this looks like a different painter, which is worth knowing about him: the deadpan figuration is a choice, not a limit.
