The ArtistJulie Anne Mann

Julie Anne Mann lives and works in the Pacific Northwest, returned to the region after twenty-five years studying and working in New York. She is a graduate of The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, and her work has been exhibited throughout the United States.

The majority of Mann's work is composed from natural materials, using their inherent qualities to exemplify or allude to parallels found in human nature. Often the work weaves in botanical lore and allegories to address the relentless push and pull between humanity and the natural world. In her Forest Portrait series, she chose book-matched walnut burl panels to serve as a backdrop for large-scale tree portraits. After applying silver leaf, a delicate cross-hatching technique reveals the twisted and gnarled shapes that are the trees of the Pacific Northwest.

She works across natural materials including deer antler, charcoal, and silver leaf on wood panel — composing pieces that read as anthropomorphic subjects rather than studies, with the silver leaf creating a soft sheen across the surface. Mann is an alumna of Roby King Gallery on Bainbridge Island, the legacy program JG Art Gallery acquired and continues.
